This preparation includes steps after mass excavation, such as:

Establishing the base of the excavation at the correct elevation, which should be checked using a laser level;

Locating the base of the elevation about 6 inches below the lowest layer of geogrid. That way, the lowest layer of geogrid will be surrounded by new, compacted and tested soil; and,

Cleaning the base of the excavation to remove all soft, loose, wet, frozen, baked-dry, or otherwise disturbed soil.
