After a mass excavation is made for a segmental retaining wall into a hillside, preparation of the site is still required before beginning retaining wall construction.

This preparation includes steps after mass excavation, such as:

  • Establishing the base of the excavation at the correct elevation, which should be checked using a laser level;
  • Locating the base of the elevation about 6 inches below the lowest layer of geogrid.  That way, the lowest layer of geogrid will be surrounded by new, compacted and tested soil; and,
  • Cleaning the base of the excavation to remove all soft, loose, wet, frozen, baked-dry, or otherwise disturbed soil.
